After enjoying a delicious lunch at a traditional local restaurant, return to your riad for the night, where you can relax and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
After an early breakfast, we begin our journey toward Merzouga, traveling through diverse landscapes that shift from lush greenery to the golden sands of the Sahara.
Our route takes us through Ifrane, often called “The Switzerland of Morocco”, where alpine-style houses, cool weather, and lush surroundings make it feel unlike any other place in the country. Along the way, we pass through Ifrane National Park, home to one of Morocco’s largest cedar forests. If we’re lucky, we may encounter the famous Barbary macaques, which have migrated as far as Gibraltar. Feeding them is allowed, but caution is advised.
Continuing our journey, we cross the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping at scenic viewpoints to take in the breathtaking landscapes. As we descend into the desert region, the scenery transforms into vast rocky plateaus and oasis valleys, leading us to Erfoud, a town famous for its fossils and marble products. Here, we visit a local fossil workshop, where artisans craft jewelry and decorative items from prehistoric marine fossils.
By late afternoon, we reach Merzouga, where the first golden dunes of the Sahara rise behind your accommodation. Here, you’ll embark on an unforgettable camel trek, traversing the rolling dunes to witness a spectacular desert sunset. Be sure to bring your camera to capture this magical moment before settling into your desert camp or hotel for a peaceful night under the stars.
After enjoying an authentic Moroccan breakfast, featuring freshly baked bread, olives, egg tajine, and traditional sweets, we set off on a regional exploration of the Merzouga desert, uncovering its hidden treasures and cultural heritage.
Your journey takes you deep into the dunes, where you’ll discover vast fossil plains and visit the old kohl (eyeliner) mines, once an important resource for local communities. A highlight of the day is a visit to a Gnawa music house, where you’ll experience the hypnotic rhythms of traditional African drums and learn about the rich cultural heritage of the Gnawa people, who were brought to Morocco centuries ago.
Next, you’ll share mint tea with nomads, seated beneath their hand-woven wool tents, gaining insight into their traditional way of life in the vast desert. For lunch, indulge in Madfouna, the famous Berber pizza, traditionally baked over an open fire at a local restaurant.
The afternoon is yours to relax or explore the towering sand dunes at your own pace. If you’re feeling adventurous, your hotel can provide a sandboard for an exciting desert surfing experience. End the day with a delicious dinner and an overnight stay at your hotel, embracing the tranquility of the Sahara under a star-lit sky.
After a leisurely breakfast, we set off toward Boumalne Dades, traveling along the famous Road of 1000 Kasbahs—a historic route lined with ancient fortresses, traditional Berber villages, and lush river oases. This journey offers a fascinating glimpse into Morocco’s past, where caravans once traveled through the valleys, trading goods between the Sahara and the imperial cities.
Our first major stop is the Todra Gorge, a breathtaking natural wonder located at 1,550 meters above sea level, at the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. The towering rock walls of this narrow canyon, shaped by the flowing crystal-clear river, create a dramatic landscape that is perfect for exploration and photography.

Next, we reach Ouarzazate, Morocco’s cinematic capital, home to Atlas Studios, where numerous Hollywood films have been shot. From here, we visit the famous Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar (fortified village). This ancient clay-built settlement has been the backdrop for films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Wandering through its narrow alleys and centuries-old structures, you’ll feel transported to another era.
The journey then takes us high into the Atlas Mountains, reaching the Tizi N’Tichka Pass (2,260m), where we stop to admire the stunning panoramic views before descending toward the Marrakech plains. Along the way, we stop for one of Morocco’s most unique sights—goats perched on argan trees, searching for fruit. We pause for photos and a chance to learn about the region’s famous argan oil production.
Upon arrival, we visit the historic Portuguese fortress, where cannons still face the Atlantic, offering a glimpse into the town’s maritime history. Next, we head to the fishing port, where you can choose from the day’s fresh seafood catch, cooked on the spot. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a freshly caught oyster, a local delicacy.

We then continue to Rabat, Morocco’s capital and one of its four imperial cities. Here, we visit:
From Rabat, we drive north toward Chefchaouen, passing through beautiful mountain landscapes. By late afternoon or evening, we arrive in the picturesque Blue City, nestled in the heart of the Rif Mountains.

I had a wonderful 10-day tour of Morocco with Moha from Morocco Itinerary Company. The tour began in Fes and took us to the Merzouga Desert, Bomalen Dades, Marrakech, and Essaouira. The highlight of the trip was definitely the Merzouga Desert. We rode camels through the dunes and watched the sunset over the Sahara. The campsite was comfortable and the food was delicious. Bomalen Dades was also a beautiful stop on the tour. The scenery was breathtaking and we enjoyed hiking through the canyons. Marrakech and Essaouira were both vibrant cities with plenty of sights to see and delicious food to try. Furthermore we have the chance to visit Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Udayas Kasbah and Hassan Tower in Rabat. Later we headed to chefchouen then to Fes where our tour ended.
