The economy of the place revolves around fishing, the wood, textile and food industry, and the trade in handicraft products , marquetry and jewelry in particular. It has a gas pipeline and an airfield. Essaouira hosts annually the Gnawa Festival of Essaouira that attracts thousands of visitors. In the Ancient Age, Phoenician expeditions explored these coasts used to search for a gastropod of the Murex genus, from which they obtained the purple, in a kind of factory located on the island of Mogador, in front of the city of Essaouira.
